Workshop Description

Lichens and mosses turn even the barest winter branch into a miniature ecosystem that invites close observation. Take your time, enjoy this meditative study of tiny botanical worlds, and learn how to create their various textures, patterns, and brilliant colors with a mix of colored pencil and watercolor. (Want a fun challenge? Try using kraft paper for this workshop!)

Mosses can be spongy, soft, bristly, feathery, fibrous… Lichens can be crusty, leafy, shrubby, powdery, scaly… Bring any* branches from your backyard, and we’ll walk you through the whole process so you’ll leave this workshop with new textural skills in your botanical illustration toolkit.

*Consider the size of your paper, and choose the length of your subjects accordingly

Recommended Supplies:

NOTE: In addition to our usual supplies, you may find yourself focusing on small details. Tools like embossers, wax paper, Verithin pencils, and a magnifying glass may be helpful here (but are not mandatory!). We will likely demonstrate on white paper, but if you’d like to try drawing your branch on Kraft paper, you may want a Polychromos Bistre #179 pencil and a Prismacolor White PC938 pencil.

Find all of the supplies that we recommend here. Feel free to follow along with any supplies you have (your result may just end up looking a little different). Our lessons are about a combination of fundamental 3D art concepts and colored pencil and watercolor technique, so you can skip the supplies-specific tips and still learn a lot about art basics including perspective, light source, composition, etc. One of the main points we teach is colored pencil and watercolor technique for slow, continuous toning, but as long as you are able to achieve the same blending result with your chosen materials, you can still benefit from our course lessons.
